Revision Rhinoplasty and Hepatitis B

Can a Hepatitis B Patient Undergo Revision Rhinoplasty?

Generally, yes, a person with Hepatitis B can undergo revision rhinoplasty if the appropriate conditions are met.

However, the decision is made based on the person's viral load, liver function tests, and whether the disease is in an active or inactive state.

The Surgeon and Anesthesia Specialist Must Check the Following Points:

Is Hepatitis B active or inactive?

  • If Hepatitis B is active (high viral load, high ALT/AST), the surgery may be postponed.
  • If the person is an inactive carrier, most surgical procedures are suitable.

Liver function tests

Must be evaluated before surgery:

  • ALT
  • AST
  • PT / INR (important for bleeding tendency)
  • Bilirubin
  • Albumin

If these values are stable, surgery is generally safe.

Medications

Patients receiving treatment for Hepatitis B are checked for drug interactions.

Some antiviral treatments may interact with anesthesia, so the anesthesia doctor should be informed.

Bleeding and Recovery Process

In patients with liver dysfunction:

  • Risk of bleeding
  • Delayed wound healing

may occur.

Therefore, in surgeries such as revision rhinoplasty that require delicate tissue work, surgery planning is done individually for each patient.

Clinical Infection Controls

Regarding Hepatitis B, all surgical teams take the necessary precautions for infection control.

This does not impose any restrictions on the patient — it is standard infection protocol.

If the Hepatitis B patient has stable liver function and the disease is inactive, revision rhinoplasty can be performed.

The decision must be made after evaluation by:

  • ENT surgeon
  • Anesthesia specialist
  • If necessary, gastroenterologist

and their assessment.
