Why Are Nasal Tampons Used in Revision Rhinoplasty?
In revision surgeries, the nasal tissues may be more sensitive due to previous surgeries. Therefore, tampons may be used to:
- Control bleeding
- Ensure proper healing of the septum
- Reduce nasal swelling
- Help keep the airways open
The type of tampon used and its duration are directly related to the surgical procedure performed.
How Many Days Do Tampons Typically Stay in Place?
Standard duration: 2–5 days
In most revision rhinoplasties, silicone tampons are kept in place for 2–5 days.
In more comprehensive revisions:
If the surgery includes:
- Large tissue corrections
- Septum reshaping
- Use of cartilage grafts
Then the tampon may stay in place for 5–7 days.
This duration can vary depending on the surgeon's preference and the patient's nasal condition.
What Types of Tampons Are Used in Revision Surgeries?
Silicone Tampon
- Has air passages, allowing the patient to breathe.
- Typically stays in place for 2–5 days.
Soft Sponge Tampon
- Can be used for septum support.
- Stays in place for a shorter period.
The Option to Not Use a Tampon
In some revisions, especially when minimal corrections are made, recovery without a tampon may be possible.
Will It Hurt When the Tampon Is Removed?
With modern silicone tampons, the procedure is completed quickly, and the discomfort is generally limited to a slight pressure sensation.
The pain sensation may vary from person to person, but most patients tolerate the procedure well.
What Should Be Done While the Tampon Is in Place?
- Avoid trauma to the nose
- Avoid very hot showers
- Avoid bending over or rapid movements
- Do not blow the nose (blowing is prohibited)
- Use prescribed sprays and moisturizers as recommended
